Portugal has a complete airport network, with about ten international airports and several regional ones. The big international airports give easy access to the most popular destinations, such as Lisbon, the Algarve, Porto and the whole north, while the island airports link the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores, autonomous regions of the country, with the mainland and the rest of the world. The main airports are run by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, part of France's VINCI group.
The big mainland airports
| Airport | Code | Passengers (2024, approx.) | Distance from centre |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lisbon Humberto Delgado | LIS | 35 million | 7 km |
| Porto Francisco Sá Carneiro | OPO | 16 million | 11 km |
| Faro | FAO | 10 million | 4 km |
Lisbon is by far the main airport, hub of the national airline TAP Air Portugal and gateway for intercontinental flights to Brazil, Africa and North America. Porto is the country's second airport, serving the whole north and also Spanish Galicia; Faro is the Algarve's airport, with highly seasonal tourist traffic.
Island airports
- Madeira Cristiano Ronaldo (FNC), near Funchal, and Porto Santo airport (PXO), on the island of the same name;
- in the Azores: Ponta Delgada João Paulo II (PDL) on São Miguel, the main one, Lajes (TER) on Terceira, Horta (HOR) on Faial, Santa Maria (SMA), Pico (PIX) and Flores (FLW), plus the small airports of São Jorge, Graciosa and Corvo.
Regional airports
The mainland also has some regional airports, such as Bragança and Vila Real, linked with Lisbon and Portimão by a regional air route crossing the country from north to south, and Beja airport, in the Alentejo, little used for scheduled flights.
Lisbon's new airport
Lisbon airport, built in 1942 and surrounded by the city, has been close to saturation for years. After decades of debate, in 2024 the government chose to build the new airport in the Alcochete area, east of the Tagus, to be called Aeroporto Luís de Camões and expected to open next decade; meanwhile the current airport is being expanded.
